Ayurveda has been my personal journey–a deeply meaningful and healing journey. The more I learn about Ayurveda, the more impressed I am with its simplicity, power and effectiveness.
After I learned the Transcendental Meditation technique in the 1980’s, I started to get more interested in natural health. I began to exercise regularly and follow a better diet, one that included more fruits and vegetables. I didn’t know it then, but this was the first step of my journey to discovering Ayurveda.
Discovering Ayurveda
Shortly after I became a mother, my family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. When my daughter Olivia was five months old, she had a very bad cold. The doctor prescribed antibiotics for Olivia, but she kept spitting out the pills. A friend told me about Dr. Lad, an Ayurvedic health expert who used natural herbs for healing.
I decided to consult with Dr. Lad about Olivia’s health, and was impressed with his confidence that herbal remedies would work. Olivia took the Ayurvedic herbs without a problem. She even seemed to like them! I was surprised, since to me they tasted very bitter. Within a few days, Olivia felt much better.
This is how Dr. Lad became our family physician during the seven years we lived in New Mexico. With his support, I began to rely solely on Ayurvedic health care to raise my daughter in a natural way, without the use of allopathic medications. I also began reading books on Ayurveda, familiarizing myself with the important principles that are Ayurveda’s foundation.
