Ayurveda is the world’s oldest continuously practiced system of medicine. The word Ayurveda is Sanskrit for “science of life.” This original science of health is as old as the human race. The written records of this complete system of natural health care are about 5,000 years old.
Ayurveda has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a valid and sophisticated system of natural health care. Its effectiveness has also been confirmed by scientific research.
A Modern Revival
In 1980, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation program, began working with three of India’s top Ayurvedic experts–Dr. V.M. Dwivedi, Dr. B.D. Triguna and Dr. Balaraj Maharishi. Together, they revived the ancient knowledge of health and called it Maharishi Ayurveda.
They formed a medical council that created authentic herbal formulas according to the Ayurvedic texts. They also established an international network of doctors, clinics and schools that are dedicated to eliminating disease and offering optimal health to the people of every nation.
Enlivening Inner Intelligence
The focus of Maharishi Ayurveda is to prevent health problems before they arise, to restore good health if it has been lost, and to slow or even reverse the aging process.
It includes mental, physical, behavioral and environmental approaches to health. The goal of these four approaches is to enliven the body’s inner intelligence, which is the basis of all physiological self-repair and healing mechanisms.
Four Approaches to Better Health
The mental approach of Maharishi Ayurveda includes practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, which has been verified by scientific research as a very effective practice for building and preserving good health.
The physical approach includes proper diet, exercise, and the use of herbal products to bring balance and strength to the body.
The behavioral approach includes lifestyle changes so that we are living more in tune with the laws of nature that govern life.
The environmental approach includes living and working in healthy buildings that promote well-being, happiness and success.
